Tyler Cavanaugh signs with Atlanta Hawks

Awesome! Former GW star forward Tyler Cavanaugh has signed a partially-guaranteed deal with the Atlanta Hawks. That means he'll attend training camp and will get some dough no matter what. Chatter online suggests he may spend most of his time with the Hawks' D-League affiliate, the Erie BayHawks.

Pretty awesome to see another GW player in the pros! He joins recent NBA players like Patricio Garino, who played with the Magic last year and a bit before that Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Mike Hall.

Whoa! GW alumni game on Aug. 12: Shawnta, Sir Val, Pops, Tyler, Mike Hall, Mike King, more!!!

This sounds incredible. GW is organizing its first basketball alumni game on Saturday, August 12 at 11:30am, part of their GW Men's Basketball Reunion.

Coach Maurice Joseph tweeted out the rosters, and they're full of awesome names from the past: Shawnta Rogers, SirValiant Brown (who almost led the nation in scoring as a freshman), Mike Hall, Tyler Cavanaugh, Carl Elliott, Isaiah Armwood, and on and one. There's even some old timers there -- Don Ardell graduated in 1963!

There's a lot of NBA experience in there, stars from the past, fan favorites, and more. A few of these guys transferred to other schools, so it's cool to see them back to GW.

Here's more from GW. This is so awesome.
Dear Colonials Fan,

The GW Men's Basketball Program is about family. Whether in the Smith Center, the Tin Tabernacle, Uline Arena or Conmy Hall, if you were once a Colonial, you're forever a Colonial.

That's why I'm inviting you to join us to watch our alumni game on Saturday, August 12, at 11:30am, as part of the GW Men's Basketball Reunion. Players from across all eras of GW Basketball will come together on Tex Silverman Court and relive some of their best memories. I hope you'll cheer them on in the stands.

Tickets are free, but we ask that you RSVP by clicking here. Keep an eye on my Twitter feed for updates on who's expected to play. I look forward to seeing you in the Smith Center.

Raise High,

Maurice Joseph

See GW players this summer: 10 Colonials in the Kenner Summer League

If you need your hoops fix soon, or just want to see some of the new guys in action, you're in luck -- there are 10 Colonials playing in the Kenner League, a summer exhibition league that takes place at Georgetown's McDonough Gymnasium (i.e. where the Hoyas should play.)

GWSports has the news and which players are on which team. The league is usually fairly disorganized but this year they have a full schedule posted, which is nice. The games are underway and run until July 30.

I've been before, the games are pretty fun. Here's who is playing for GW:

2017 Nike Pro City Jabbo Kenner Summer League - GW Assignments

Darren McClinton All-Stars: Armel Potter and Justin Williams

Ballaholics University: D.J. Williams and Javier Langarica

Clydes: Jair Bolden and Terry Nolan Jr.

Higher Level: Maceo Jack and Justin Mazzulla

On Point: Yuta Watanabe and Arnaldo Toro

GW signs Illinois transfer DJ Williams

Here's some good news: GW signed former Illinois wing DJ Williams, who left that program in May. He was a former 4-star recruit but played sparingly for the Illini, appearing in 4 games. He'll sit for a season then play in the next one and has two years of eligibility.

He's a 6'7" guard from Chicago, so it's nice to see Maurice Joseph getting some talent from there -- former star forward Mike Hall is from the Windy City as well, he played on the great mid-2000s teams and played a bit in the NBA, later starring in Europe.

There's a big GWHoops thread on him, and here's his Illinois profile. He earned a lot of praise coming out of high school (see below) but his minutes dropped each year at Illinois on a stacked team. He did seem improve towards the end of the year. I hope he gets an opportunity to shine here!
  • #11 small forward nationally as a senior
  • Consensus national top-100 recruit
  • Second-team All-State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association
  • Special mention All-State by the Chicago Tribune and Champaign News-Gazette
  • Second-team All-City by the Chicago Sun-Times
  • Ranked No. 78 on the recruiting services consensus index
  • Ranked No. 46 nationally by Scout, No. 64 by ESPN and No. 91 by 247Sports
  • Participated in USA Basketball U17 Training Camp in the summer of 2014
  • MVP of the MPAC Sports Elite International Tournament in Dubai in the summer of 2014, leading Simeon to the title while averaging 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists
  • Averaged 10 points, six rebounds and four assists as a junior, earning special mention All-State honors by the IBCA
  • Member of Simeon teams that won IHSA Class 4A state titles his freshman (2012) and sophomore (2013) seasons
  • High school coach was Rob Smith
  • Played for the Meanstreets AAU program, coached by Tai Streets

Awesome interview with Maurice Joseph on NBC's College Basketball Talk: check it out

GW head coach Maurice Joseph recently joined NBC Sports' Rob Dauster's College Basketball Talk podcast -- it's a great interview and Mojo seems like an awesome, smart guy. Check it out. He talks about recruiting, Canadian hoops, GW and more.

As Thinker said on the GWHoops site:

  • If you want to understand why GW picked MoJo to lead the team - listen to the podcast.
  • If you are skeptical that someone so young can lead the program - listen to the podcast.
  • If you wonder whether MoJo will likely be able to recruit well - listen to the podcast.
  • If you are excited about the future of GW basketball with MoJo at the helm - listen to the podcast regularly.

GW vs Dayton this weekend: relive buzzer beaters from past years

The Colonials face Dayton this weekend, and these games have been awesome in the past few years -- big turnouts and close matchups. GW has won three at the buzzer, let's see it happens again. Here's a few videos of those awesome endings.

Nice USA Today article on Maurice Joseph

This is cool -- USA Today has a profile of Coach Mojo, talking about hitting the ground running after being named interim head coach a day before practice started. In this case, it was literally, he immediately went to East Lansing, Michigan to meet with his mentor and former coach, Tom Izzo at Michigan State.

Mojo played for Izzo (see above) before transferring to Vermont, and he got a lot of advice from him before the season.

The good guys are currently 13-12 and 5-7 in conference, though that was almost 6-6 with a near-win over VCU. Nice to see this article, and nice to be in the news lately for something other than that painful game.

Want some cool GW hats? Lids and the GW Bookstore have some awesome ones

The other day I was goofing around online and spotted some cool GW caps from Lids -- I didn't know they carried them. That got me browsing more and I found a few nice designs on other sites like the GW Athletics Department's official store. (The GW Bookstore seems to carry the same ones as the department.)

They're also not too expensive, and some of the ones on Lids are on sale.

There's some cool designs on both sites -- any other places you'd suggest to find GW hats or other gear?
You can get college basketball tickets here.
