GW ends regular season today at Bonaventure; drops one to Mason on Wednesday

The weird regular season is coming to an end: GW's last regular season game is today against St. Bonaventure, at the Reilly Center in St. Bonaventure, NY. (I recently learned that the school is not in fact in Olean.) The game is at 6pm ET on ESPN+.

The Bonaventure game will be a tough one, the Bonnies are first in the A-10 with a very strong defense, allowing the 17th fewest points in the nation. Here's GW's game preview, and the WaPo also has a preview from the AP.

The season has been cut short for the good guys, the A-10 announced last week, meaning GW will end with only 8 conference games thanks to two pauses due to positive COVID-19 tests as well as the postponement due to the Capitol attack in January. The Colonials are currently 4-11 overall and 3-4 in conference.

GW hasn't shared too much about why the postponed games weren't made up, but one can assume it's because the A-10 tournament was moved to March 3-6, meaning there isn't much time to fit those missing games in. There's also been speculation online that the league didn't want the top teams to play meaningless games that could result in bad losses and hurt their at-large NCAA chances.

GW has played the fewest conference games, but actually hasn't played the fewest games of any A-10 school: UMass has played 12 overall, Fordham only has played 13 games, all in conference, and Duquesne has played 15.

GW also dropped a heartbreaker to George Mason 63-58 after leading by 13 at halftime. The good guys were up 1 with 2 minutes to go, but a couple of key turnovers erased the lead.
