GW hires assistant coach Eric Atkins from Howard

The Colonials have added an assistant coach, with Eric Atkins moving down the hill from Howard University. The GW announcement says he worked with Howard's star guards like MEAC all-time leading scorer Charles Williams, Wayne Bristol Jr., who was the conference rookie of the year last year, and big man Makur Maker, the first 5-star recruit ever to come to a MEAC school.

Atkins played point guard in college, starring at Notre Dame from 2010-2014. He was a starter for almost his entire career and was also All-ACC in 2014. He went to high school at Mt. St. Joseph in Baltimore and was part of the DC Assault AAU program.

GWHoops posters speculate he'll focus on GW's guards, and I am guessing he fills the spot opened up when assistant Nima Omidvar left the program just before the season began. It's not known what happened with Omidvar.

This sounds like a good addition to me, and I hope Atkins can help with development, recruiting and Xs and Os.

There was also some activity about the hire on Twitter, GW Hall of Famer Mike Hall tweeted that he was interested in the job but disappointed he didn't get a phone call from GW, and later clarified that and said he thinks Atkins will be good. I hope in the future GW considers Hall for a spot with the program, I think he'd be a great addition.
