Basketball is back! The pause is over, GW to host VCU on Jan. 13

It's basketball time again in Foggy Bottom. Last week GW announced that basketball was "on pause" after a positive COVID test among "Tier-1 staff" and postponed the January 10th St. Bonaventure game, and today they announced that the pause is over Wednesday's game against VCU is back on.

Tier 1 is an NCAA definition that means "student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials" who can't wear a mask or are in close contact.

There's not much additional info in the GW announcement, but reporter Jon Rothstein said the team resumed practice and ended quarantine on the 9th and GW's announcement says "After having a pair of contests postponed last week the George Washington men's basketball team is safe, unpaused and ready to resume competition." As you recall, the game on the 6th against UMass was also postponed after the attack on the Capitol and the subsequent DC curfew. A crazy week for the Colonials (and the world.)

GWHoops message board posters said the positive test wasn't among coaching staff or players, and considering the GW announcement, presumably everyone was tested and came back negative. I hope whoever tested positive has a mild case with no lingering effects, and gets well soon.

GW and VCU are both 2-1 in the A-10, with the Colonials at 3-7 overall and the Rams at 9-3.

According to Rothstein, other A-10 and local programs are also currently on pause due to the coronavirus: American, Howard, Richmond, and Saint Louis, with SLU set to return on January 15.
