GW hires Maurice Joseph, no transfers so far (so that's good)

Hey! Basketball season is almost here, and I'm a bit busy these days. (Related: if anybody wants to help write for this site, please email me: colonial hoops(at)gmail.com)

So, first the big news: after Coach Lonergan was fired, the school spent a few agonizing days before announcing that assistant coach Maurice Joseph would be promoted to interim head coach. This was a bit of a surprised, as Hajj Turner was the associate head coach and Carmen Maciariello was also a senior assistant with the team. All three were interviewed, according to the Post.

The common thought is that Joseph was very popular with the players, and he seems to have been a good pick, insofar as nobody has transferred out yet, something that a lot of fans feared.

It remains to be see how Joseph is as a coach, recruiter, and such (some on GWHoops worry he isn't an Xs and Os guy) but I'm pretty happy with the choice and looking forward to the season.

Joseph, who is 31, played under Lonergan at Vermont for two years and has been an assistant under him since he came to GW in 2011. Before Vermont he played at Michigan State under Tom Izzo. Here's more about him from GW:
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Joseph began his collegiate playing career at Michigan State in 2005 where he helped the Spartans make two NCAA Tournament appearances. He transferred to the University of Vermont in 2007 and led the Catamounts to 24 wins in 2009 and 25 wins in 2010, including an America East Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. That season, Joseph was the team's second-leading scorer (13.9 ppg) while shooting a career-best .374 (77-206) from three-point range. He also ranked second in the America East in free throw percentage (.848) in 2009-10. Joseph also had a decorated prep career at Champlain-St. Lambert in Montreal, where as a senior in 2005, he was named Canada's National Player of the Year.
