Entire coaching staff fired, national search to start

Big news, though to me not unexpected. The university emailed today to say the entire coaching staff has been let go, and there will be a national search for the next coach.

I really like Maurice Joseph, but he's 24-42 over three seasons including 9-24 this year and 4-14 in conference. I also like that there will be a national search and that they want GW to make the tournament regularly. Good luck to Coach Joseph and his staff, and thank you.

ESPN has a story about it too. Here's the statement on the GWSports.com site, plus an email from Athletic Director Tanya Vogel.

WASHINGTON — George Washington University Director of Athletics and Recreation Tanya Vogel announced today that Maurice Joseph will not return as head coach of the men's basketball program.

In three seasons, Joseph compiled a 44-57 record, including 9-24 in 2018-19. GW saw its season end on Thursday with a loss in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.

"This is a difficult day because Maurice has led this program with high integrity and has always been a great representative of George Washington University. He has been a part of our staff for eight seasons, earning a degree and meeting his wife, Kristen, a fellow GW graduate here. We hope they will always feel like a part of our family."

"This decision was necessary because we are not reaching our full potential on the court. Our university leadership and I have high expectations for what this program can achieve in the near future. We will move forward with a national search for our new head coach who will help us get back to competing for Atlantic 10 Championships and being in the conversation for NCAA bids on a regular basis."
And the email:
Good morning,  I want to alert you to some news regarding our men’s basketball program. Earlier today, I informed our men’s basketball coaching staff that I am making a change and they will not be returning. This is a challenging day here in Foggy Bottom, as these men have dedicated many years of their lives to GW and our men’s basketball program. I am grateful for their commitment and their service to our young men. I wish Coaches Joseph, Turner, Paulus and Holm the very best in their future endeavors.

As you know, our charge is to be the very best, positive displays of discipline and excellence for our university. Your program has a storied history of excellence and is the most visible program at GW. Our next leader will be charged with returning your program to the excellence that you helped to build. This means winning in the classroom, in the community and in competition. We will win the right way.

There will be a national search for the next head coach. We are committed to this search process and look forward to introducing you to our next head coach later this spring. We remain determined to continuing our work together as we create and sustain our programs with the highest levels of discipline and excellence.
I appreciate your support.
Sincerely,Tanya Vogel Director of Athletics & Recreation
