Want to be George the mascot? Sign up!

GW is looking for students to be George, the mascot. It could be you! Honestly, think about how much fun that would be.

I was a mascot in high school (I went to two schools, I was Admiral Farragut at one and a big blue furry bird thing at the other) and while I'm sure it's different, the main requirement was being enthusiastic. If you can dance, that's good too (I could not.)

It can be a fair amount of work, since you're running around in a big costume, but is definitely a good time. Everybody is happy to see you, kids like you, and ladies love you. Ok, maybe that one is a stretch.

One of my buddies actually used to be the turtle at UMd, which just goes to show that sometimes good things can come from College Park.

Here's the flyer from GW. Sign up! Click it for the full version!

GW's media day is Oct. 22 and you can ask questions via Twitter! #GWMediaDay

Tomorrow is GW's media day, and you can be involved! Aside from just watching (and it'll be streamed live) you can ask questions of the players and coaches via Twitter.

Here's more from GW, posted on the GWHoops.com message board.

It'll be from 1:30-2:10pm, so get your questions in before then.
Tomorrow is GW Media Day and we're trying a new social media initiative.
We're encouraging people to ask questions via social media to @GW_MBB and @GW_WBB on twitter using the hashtag #GWMediaDay.

Anything goes (even goofy questions within reason) and we'd love to get some interaction from you all.  The players will answer the questions on live stream tomorrow at the event.

The press release adds that both Coach Lonergan and Tsipis will be there, plus men's players Patricio Garino, Kethan Savage, Joe McDonald, Kevin Larsen, John Kopriva, Maurice Creek and Isaiah Armwood. For the women, it's Brooke Wilson, Chakecia Miller, Jonquel Jones, Megan Nipe and Danni Jackson.

It's a pretty cool opportunity to ask some good (or ridiculous) questions! And kudos to GW for setting it up.

Alum Pops Mensah-Bonsu with the Wizards in training camp

Former GW basketball star Pops Mensah-Bonsu (class of 2006) has signed with the Wizards for their training camp games. Pops previously played for the Mavericks, Raptors, Spurs and Hornets, and had a lot of success overseas in Turkey, Italy and Spain, plus the Great Britain National Team. He would join Mike Hall as former GW hoopsters to play for the Wiz if he makes the squad.

And the King Whale Killer got on the team at a good time: they just got to Rio de Janeiro for the NBA Global Games, where NBA teams play overseas.

Unfortunately he also got dunked on by the Wizards' Jan Vesely. Hey, it happens. The comments from the players were pretty funny though:
It was disgusting,” forward Trevor Ariza said, scrunching his face, whilst talking to The Washington Post.

“It looked like a nuclear explosion. Everybody curse at the same time,” Nene said.

The 6’9″ Mensah-Bonsu, currently at Wizards camp trying to make a return to the NBA, took it all in good spirit, though.

“I’m cool. I’m going to take it. I got dunked on. That’s okay. Come back tomorrow. Let’s see what happens,” he said with a laugh. “But he jumped over me. I think he jumped outside the paint. He took out from far. He dunked it hard. And he let me know about it. He don’t even speak English well and he let me know about it. What is that about? He said, ‘Yeah. Yeah. I dunked you.’ ”
