Nice Hatchet article on Johnny Lee

The Hatchet has a nice piece on Johnny Lee, talking about his rise from regular student to walk-on to fan favorite to starter. He's thinking about going to grad school at Lipscomb or Stony Brook and playing one more year of college hoops there. I guess that means academics are taking priority over basketball here, which is pretty cool to see.

Oregon State, Obama(?) to the Smith Center next year

Looks like Oregon State, where Michelle Obama's brother Craig Robinson is head coach, will be playing at the Smith Center next season. Good to see, as for one, this is a team from a big conference, and two, maybe that means the Obamas will show up. It was big news when Bill Clinton came to GW in 1993, and this would be big news also. Hooper at GWhoops.com says they will be in the house.

Of course, maybe not. Oregon State played at Howard this past season and the Obamas weren't in the house. Plus, Howard won and the Howard fans stormed the court, including a guy in a Howard cape. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

Also in Oregon news, former GW recruit Jared Cunningham, who was from the state and didn't qualify, won't be playing -- Oregon State has a player with the same name, but it's a different person. Odd.

Pops vs. the Wiz yesterday in DC

Pops Mensah-Bonsu and the Raptors were in town yesterday against the Wizards, and the Whale Killer had a good game, with 9 points, 12 boards, and 5 steals in 20 minutes. The Raptors came from 13 down with 6:30 left to win it, with Chris Bosh hitting a three with a couple seconds left. Good game, and both the TV and Verizon Center announcers talked about Pops a lot. Check out the photo in the Toronto Globe & Mail. He's all over Google News too.

There was also some kind of on-campus event for Pops, but I don't know much about it.

In other Pops news, the Raptors will make a qualifying offer to him, meaning if another club makes an offer for him, they have a right to match it. Nice.

10 minutes of Sir Valiant Brown

I may have posted this before, but it's too good to ignore - a 10 minute Youtube video on Sirvaliant Brown, who was a star at GW and the nation's 2nd-leading scorer his freshman year in the 1999-2000 season with 24.6 ppg.

Brown scored a lot, but he also had a green light at all times from Tom Penders, so he shot all the time at around a 30% pace. He struggled his second year, and then left school, entering the NBA draft - supposedly because of bad grades and bad advice. He didn't get drafted and has been bouncing around overseas and in smaller leagues in the US.

Anyway, there's 10 minutes of him. And here's Sports Illustrated on him.

GW's history in the NCAA tourney

Sorry, no April Fool's prank this year.

Mentzinger posted this link at GWHoops.com, it's a little rundown of GW's history in the NCAA tourney - pretty cool. Enjoy.
