Old School GW: Kentucky in Maui, 1997

It's a slow news day, so I thought I'd start a new series on GW history.

I found this, the box score and recap of the GW vs #9 Kentucky game in the Maui Invitational, when looking for pictures of GW star Yegor Mescheriakov. GW featured Mescheriakov and Shawnta Rogers, the 5'4" dynamo who led the nation in steals his senior season, and Antxon Iturbe got a (rare) double double this game. I think Mike King was hurt then, as he didn't play. Kentucky had Nazr Mohammmed, Jamaal Magloire, and Scott Padgett, plus Jeff Sheppard and Wayne Turner, who both had a cup of coffee in the NBA but whom I don't remember.

GW lost 70-55 on a Sir Valiant-esque shooting night from Shawnta, who went 6-17 from the floor, though he did have 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Yegor (whose brother Nikita is now on Gtown's basketball team) scored 12 and had 7 boards.

GW was 24-9 that season and made the NCAA tourney, losing to Oklahoma State, one of four A-10 teams in the tourney, plus Richmond, Charlotte, and SLU, which weren't in the A-10 at the time. Here's the full tourney.

That season, GW beat Boston College, DePaul, UPenn, #19 Maryland, and some others. The team averaged 4100 fans at home.
